Carpet is a textile floor covering consisting of an upper layer of “pile” attached to a backing. The pile is generally either made from wool or a man-made fiber such as polypropylene, and usually consists of twisted tufts which are often heat-treated to maintain their structure. The pile isn’t the problem when it comes to cutting, it’s the backing. To cut this backing you need a shear with a sharp edge and made of strong steel. You also need a shear that has good leverage and it helps to have a bent handle if shears are used in installs. Depending on your application, a shear may be modified with specific angles or corrugations.
